Most Teens Who Self-Harm Are Not Evaluated for Mental Health in ER

By HealthDay

Most children and teens who deliberately injure themselves are discharged from emergency rooms without an evaluation of their mental health, a new study shows.

The findings are worrisome since risk for suicide is greatest right after an episode of deliberate self-harm, according to researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

The researchers also found the

People share stories about self-injuring

Almost instinctively, she grabbed the orange-handled scissors on the counter.

Kirsten Steadman (pictured at right) softly opened the dull blades and began sawing into the soft, ivory skin of her leg. Bright red blood jolted her back to painful reality. She jumped away from the counter and flung the

Self-harm questionnaire

I keep seeing this "30-day self-harm challenge" on Tumblr. It's been making the rounds for a while, but I haven't done it yet. I'm going to answer them all now and not spread it out over 30 days because I have no attention span and will not complete it if I don't just do it all now.

1. How long have you been self harming? Discuss why you started.
I was 12 years old when I started. I'm 29 now,

Same shit, different day (may be triggering)

There is something seriously wrong with me... something that's different than I've ever experienced. I don't even know what words to say to describe it.

It's like I have no feelings anymore, no emotions. I wouldn't say I'm numb to things. I've been through that before, and this is different. It's almost like my heart is just dead. My brain is obviously alive and torturing me, but my heart is

Admitting my suicidal thoughts and self-harm did nothing

On Wednesday I met a friend/former coworker for cupcakes after she got off work. We've always had an on-the-surface type of friendship, meaning that I rarely, if ever, let her in on what was happening inside my mind. She's always known I have mental health issues, but I've rarely told her much about them.

I told her yesterday that my boyfriend and I have been talking about me checking myself

Before you decide to cut - video

I was searching YouTube for a music video and the following video showed up in the "related videos" links. The person who made this video really knows what it feels like to be a cutter and is wanting to stop people from becoming future cutters. It's done very well (no photos, just words and background music). I just wish I could turn back time to when I was 12 years old and read these words

2 poems I wrote about wanting to cut (could be triggering)

I wrote these poems in the middle of the night the other night when I was severely wanting to cut myself. I was able to make it through the night without cutting. Somehow the emotions came out as poetry, not cuts.

"Drip Drip"

Everything is fake,
The blade gives way to life.

Drip.
        Drip.

April slips into May.

Drip.
        Drip.

The blade, it calls to me,
Tells me to cut.

Drip.

Self-harming again

Along with all the other borderline symptoms that have come back due to my relapse, self-harm has crept itself back into my life. Cutting or scratching is always in the back of my mind, but I am pretty good at fighting off the desire to do it... well until recently.

At first I was doing it really without thinking. It started with biting my fingernails obsessively, then progressed to biting off

Demi Lovato reveals her diagnosis of bipolar disorder

By Noelene Clark,
LA Times

Demi Lovato, who last week tweeted her support for Catherine Zeta-Jones' "brave" decision to be treated for bipolar II disorder, revealed that she too is bipolar.

The 18-year-old Disney actress discovered her diagnosis during her three-month stay at a rehabilitation center in Illinois, where she was treated for anorexia, bulimia and cutting.

"Black Swan" just about killed me

I'm very far behind making a post about the movie "Black Swan." Many people blogged about it when it came out in theaters, but I just watched it Sunday night. My boyfriend and I almost went to see it in a theater when it first came out, but I knew it looked creepy and I figured it would give me nightmares. Little did I know that it would trigger me into wanting to cut myself or worse.

In the

Study finds many graphic YouTube self-harm videos

By The Associated Press

YouTube videos on cutting and other self-injury methods are an alarming new trend, attract millions of hits and could serve as a how-to for troubled viewers, a study warns.

Many videos show bloody live enactments or graphic photos of people cutting their arms or legs with razors or other sharp objects, the study found. Many also glamorize self-injury and few videos
